Baptism of a Child of Record (Age 8)
This guide is for parents preparing their 8-year-old child for baptism and confirmation in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a parent, you have the sacred responsibility to lead this process with support from your ward leaders.
Step 1: Begin Preparation at Home (Around Age 7)
Talk with your child about baptism, the Holy Ghost, and making covenants. Use resources like:
- Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families
- Church Study and Teaching Resources for Children
- Church videos and stories about baptism
Start now to build a pattern of prayer, scripture study, and Sabbath observance.
Parents are primarily responsible to prepare their children for baptism, beginning around age 7. Ward leaders are there to support you, not to replace your role.
Step 2: Contact the Bishopric (3–6 Months Before their 8th Birthday)
Reach out to the bishop or a counselor to let them know your child is preparing for baptism.
- Schedule an interview for your child to assess readiness and understanding of baptism and confirmation (see the questions here)
- Ensure the Baptism and Confirmation Form is completed by working with the ward clerk. This can be initiated by contacting the ward clerk or executive secretary.
Step 3: Schedule and Plan the Baptismal Service
Coordinate with the Primary presidency and bishopric to select a date and plan the program. Work together on:
- Program details (talks, music, prayers)
- Inviting extended family and friends
- Announcements to the ward (if desired)
- Filling the font (usually this is a member of the family or the Ward Mission Leader)
Let the leaders know who you’d like to perform the baptism and confirmation. They’ll help confirm everything is ready and in accordance with Church guidelines. Ensure that a member of the bishopric will be there to preside.
The service typically includes a welcome, musical numbers, short talks, the baptism and confirmation ordinances, and a closing prayer.
Step 4: Prepare for the Ordinances
Confirm with the bishopric that the person performing the baptism and confirmation is approved and ordained. A priest may baptize; a Melchizedek Priesthood holder performs the confirmation. Note that even if a father cannot attend the temple, he may still perform the baptism and confirmation if he holds the proper priesthood and is approved by the bishop.
Both the child and the baptizer need white, non-transparent clothing (this can be found in the hallway closets by the Relief Society room. Check in advance to make sure there are clothes that fit or make other arrangements). Also plan to bring a towel, a change of underwear, and a bag to carry the wet clothing home in. If you're borrowing clothes for the service, please launder and return them so they are available for others.
Review with your child how the baptism is performed (e.g., immersion, proper wording).
Encourage your child to prepare spiritually by praying and reading the scriptures.
Step 5: Confirm the Baptism and Membership Record
After the baptism and confirmation:
- Follow up with the ward clerk to ensure your child’s membership record is updated in LCR.
- Request a Baptism and Confirmation Certificate if one is not automatically provided.
